I just had something really awesome happen to me. It reminded me that I have some really f*ing awesome friends & that as spiritual illnesess such as racism, sexism & homophobia plague humanity, there are many genuine, open minded people of ALL backgrounds who are speaking out & doing the right thing these days...especially when they have to defend a friend. I had to meet my friend today just to pick up something. We agreed to meet at the park near our old apartment building. Anyway, we were chatting & laughing as we always do when one of the local homeless women walked by us & shouted out something racist. I didn't hear what the woman said because I had 1 headphone in--it was all a blurr but I know that someone said something awful so, I pulled the other headphone out & all I heard was my friend Ash ripping the woman a new a**hole stating that she should shut her mouth & leave the neighborhood & that if she kept talking, she'd beat the sh*t out of her. Now...I must say that my friend is far from violent. However, if anyone ever laid a hand on her dog,her friends or any of her other loved ones, she'd do damage. She may have sweet freckles, long eyelashes that decorate her icy blue eyes gentle curls in her strawberry blonde hair but she's a real firework. I'm Glad I'm on her good side! Anyway, the woman backed down & scurried away. I got a good look at the lady as she walked away. I remembered her from last summer. I would always walk by & hear her singing something in some language other than English. I mentioned to my friend that the lady was out of her mind because she chose to be. I assured her that even though I was a bit shaken up, it was something that made me laugh at her, rather than cry as hard as she does on the inside. And then my amazing friend said this to me: "...Racist people need to be told what's up even if they happen to be a little crazy." She's right, there are no excuses for bullying under racism or any other phobia. None. At all. Ever. No excuses. We all know exactly what we mean inside when we speak. It's up to us as individuals to keep ourselves in check in life. Still in awe of her bravery & brilliance. <3
